3 easy ways to reduce costs by monitoring your fleet fuel with Ruptela devices

Challenges: Why fleets need fuel monitoring

Fuel costs are a major concern for fleet operators worldwide. Whether managing trucks in North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, or Africa, high fuel prices, inefficient fuel use, and fuel theft are serious problems. Without a fuel monitoring system, businesses lose money, waste fuel, and operate less efficiently. Common problems include:

Fuel theft

Unauthorized use
of company vehicle

Poor driving skills leading
to high consumption

Excessive idling

A truck tracking system with fuel monitoring helps solve these problems by improving fuel efficiency and preventing theft.

Fuel monitoring: Smart investment

A fuel monitoring system is not just an expense – it helps to save money. With Ruptela’s fuel tracking system, businesses can:

Reduce costs by managing fuel use better.

Prevent fuel theft with alerts and monitoring.

Track when, where, and how much fuel is added/consumed.

Improve routes and driver behavior to use less fuel.

Get instant updates on fuel usage and unusual patterns.

Truck GPS tracking with fuel monitoring gives businesses complete control over fuel expenses. Features like fuel tracking, real-time fuel analysis, and monitoring of fuel purchases help fleet managers detect unusual fuel use, prevent theft, and reduce costs.

3 easy ways to monitor fuel

All Ruptela devices support fuel monitoring solutions, but in this article, we highlight three examples from our three different segments of devices, each with a unique installation method.

1. HCV5 Lite + FMS/OBD Harness

How It Works:

  1. Plug the FMS/OBD harness into the vehicle’s interface.
  2. Connect FMS/OBD harness to HCV5 Lite.
  3. HCV5 Lite collects fuel data from the vehicle’s system.

Benefits:

  • Easiest installation – simply plug and play
  • Accurate fuel usage data
  • Low installation and maintenance costs
  • Real-time fuel monitoring

This is the most effortless solution for businesses looking for a quick, cost-effective, and user-friendly way to track fuel use with GPS tracking devices for commercial trucks.

2. Smart5 + EasyCAN

How It Works:

  1. Connect EasyCAN to the vehicle’s CANbus wires.
  2. Connect EasyCAN to Smart5.
  3. The Smart5 device receives fuel data through EasyCAN.

Benefits:

  • No direct wire cutting needed
  • Fast and safe installation with EasyCAN
  • EasyCAN installation allows to avoid violating of the manufacturer’s warranty
  • Accurate fuel usage tracking
  • Real-time fuel monitoring

This method is perfect for fleets that want a secure and efficient truck GPS tracking system reducing interference in the vehicle’s wiring. It provides a fast and safe connection to the vehicle’s onboard computer. The EasyCAN adapter connects a GPS tracking device to the vehicle’s onboard computer without cutting any wires and without violating the manufacturer’s warranty.

3. Eco5 Family + Wireless Fuel Level Sensor

How It Works:

  1. Install the wireless fuel sensor inside the fuel tank.
  2. Calibrate fuel level sensor.
  3. Connect fuel sensor to Eco5 via BLE 5.0.
  4. The sensor sends fuel data to the Eco5 device.

Benefits:

  • High accuracy of fuel level data
  • Wireless setup
  • Real-time fuel tracking
  • Alerts for fuel theft

For businesses looking for an advanced fuel monitoring solution, this method provides the most accurate fuel level tracking. However, it is also one of the most time-consuming methods due to the need for precise sensor calibration. Despite this, it offers excellent theft protection and real-time fuel monitoring.

Bonus method for older trucks

Older diesel trucks often face challenges in accurately measuring fuel consumption due to return fuel flow. When the truck is in operation, fuel is drawn into the engine, but a portion of it returns to the tank via a separate tube. Since CANbus only records the fuel used by the engine, it does not account for this returning fuel. This creates a loophole where fuel theft can occur – drivers may siphon fuel from the return line without it being reflected in the CAN data, leading to discrepancies in fuel monitoring.

By combining Smart5, EasyCAN and wireless fuel level sensors, fleet managers can cross-analyze fuel consumption data:

  • Smart5 extracts fuel consumtion data from vehicle’s CANbus.
  • EasyCAN acquires CANbus data and provides easier installation method.
  • Wireless fuel level sensor continuously monitors the actual fuel level inside the tank.

For example, if EasyCAN reports 150 liters passing through the engine, but only 130 liters were recorded as consumed, the missing 20 liters should have returned to the tank. However, if the fuel level sensor does not register those 20 liters returning, it may indicate fuel theft. This combined method provides a more reliable way to detect fuel discrepancies and prevent unauthorized fuel use.

Summary

Fuel monitoring is essential for fleet operators worldwide. Ruptela’s solutions help businesses reduce costs, improve efficiency, and prevent theft. Whether using the HCV5 Lite, Smart5, or Eco5 Family, each option offers different installation methods to fit your needs.
